The Evolution, or Revolution, of Comcare

The Federal Government has introduced legislation to open up Comcare to more employers, with the intent of reducing red tape and compliance costs.

Comcare is a statutory authority of the Australian Federal Government established under the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 and covered by the Commonwealth Authorities and Companies Act 1997.

Certainly from a purely logical point of view, it makes sense to have a national workers’ compensation scheme, so that workers in Launceston are treated the same and have the same benefits as workers in Broome.

What is attractive for most businesses is that it would also require only one Work Health Safety regime under one piece of legislation.

Some of the changes the Abbott Government has proposed include:

  • Any employer who operates in two or more jurisdictions can apply to join Comcare as a self-insurer.
  • Group licenses allow related businesses to obtain one group license.
